All Arabian horses to race in Texas and throughout the United States must be on record with the Arabian Horse Registry. The fee for a certificate for racing is $100.
This process ensures every Arabian racehorse is registered purebred and has been parentage qualified to its sire and dam by blood and/or DNA typing. This Certificate for Racing replaces the horse's regular Registration papers, and is used to verify each Arabian entered in a race at the track.
The fee for the Certificate of Racing includes your horse's identification tatoo. The last six digits of the horse's registration number are applied to the inside of its upper lip with official dyes by an agent of the Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau. The track racing office can help you locate a TRPB agent to perform this task.
Tatooing does not appear to be any more annoying to a horse than giving a vaccination. Oddly, in fact, some horses seem to like it. As the TRPB agent applies one tatoo number, the horse will often follow the agent as if asking for another one.
Because of the recognized effectiveness of the lip-tattoo identification system, State Racing Commissions have enacted rules requiring a horse to be tattoo-branded prior to entry in a race. Identifiers at the racetracks conscientiously follow established guidelines and procedures in varied racing situations. This includes verifying the tatoo during pre-race and post-race veterinary examinations, during pre-race holding barn inspection, and in the saddling paddock before the race.

Since 1947, specially trained Technicians contracted by the TRPB have identified, tattoo-branded and photographed more than 1,000,000 racehorses throughout the United States and Canada. In support of its tattooing activities, TRPB maintains a vast storehouse of information for each horse tattooed. This includes a branding report, which details information about the horse as well as a photograph of the tattoo. This information is accessed on a regular basis by track identifiers who require assistance in correctly identifying a horse; and also by owners who conduct horse-identity research to learn the registered name, pedigree and racing history of horses acquired for non-racing pleasure use.
