Tick Disease Notice Inspections for Equine Piroplasmosis required before horses enter racetrack grounds of Manor Downs |
|
| Two Arabian races are written for Manor Downs at the end of this month and in April. Sunday, March 8 is a Maiden Special Weight going 5 1/2 furlongs, and Sunday, April 18 is an Allowance race going 1 mile. See the Manor Downs Condition Book for details.
If you plan to enter the grounds of Manor Down's racetrack for works or racing, your veterinarian must include this information on your health certificate: "I personally inspected this animal and it does not display clinical signs As an option, you can provide proof that your horse has a negative Piroplasmosis cELISA test (for Theileria equi) performed since November 1, 2009. If you do not have the above statement on your health certificate or a negative Piroplasmosis cELISA test, officials at Manor Downs will spray your horse at the ground's gate, and your horse will stay in the quarantine barn when working or racing. Also note, your negative Coggins paper is still required for entry to the racetrack as usual. Equine Piroplasmosis is a tick-transmitted disease and has been detected in Texas, although thus far at no racing establishments. Additional testing, a thorough investigation and precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the disease are being implemented throughout the state. Horses infected with Piroplasmosis exhibit weight loss and poor appetite among other symptoms, and death may occur. Horses that survive may continue to be carriers. For more information about Equine Piroplasmosis, please see the USDA-APHIS website, and for up to date notices about the Piroplasmosis situation in Texas please see the website of the Texas Animal Health Commission. |
